"He was amazing. He had the heart of gold. If he could give the shirt off his back, he would."

โ€” Irena Hasel, Vladek's sister

A generous soul with a heart for others

Bryan "Vladek" Hasel was born in Russia in December 1998 and adopted at age five alongside his sister Irena by an American family. He grew up as the youngest of eight siblings and became known throughout his Orlando neighborhood as one of the most genuinely kind people anyone had ever met.

Vladek served in the United States Marine Corps after high school, graduating from boot camp before receiving an honorable discharge in 2019. He later worked as an Environmental Services Technician at a hospital in Michigan, where coworkers said he truly thrived.

People who knew Vladek describe someone who could walk into any room and make strangers feel like old friends. He would leave enormous tips for servers who were struggling. He spent hours with Orlando's unhoused community, buying them food, supplies, and sitting with them just to listen. He once gave his credit card directly to a homeless couple who needed it.

His family has never stopped looking for him. They believe he is still out there โ€” and that someone, somewhere, has seen him.

21
2021 โ€” Ongoing
A Personality Shift Begins
Vladek gives up material possessions, develops an intense focus on religion and heaven, and begins spending extensive time helping Orlando's homeless community. He gives enormous restaurant tips, hands cash to strangers, and once lends his credit card to a homeless couple. He tells his father he wants to someday go live in the woods โ€” but only after Steve passes away, so his dad won't be alone.

Nov. 3, 2021
Car Breaks Down ยท Pocket Knife Purchased
Vladek is driving his father's car when it breaks down at Waterford Lakes Town Center. He walks three miles home, worried his dad will be angry. That same day he purchases a $60 pocket knife, telling his dad it is for personal protection.
11
Nov. 4, 2021
Reaches Out for a Place to Stay
Vladek calls an acquaintance at 7:13 PM asking if he can "crash for a night or two." The acquaintance declines. Later that night he speaks to his father about archangels and demons โ€” Steve says Vladek was not making much sense.
11
Nov. 5, 2021
Father Departs for Tennessee
Steve leaves on a 10-day trip to celebrate Vladek's sister Bethany's birthday. Vladek was invited but declined โ€” not unusual for him. Steve leaves $100 cash, a credit card, and notes there is food in the fridge. He asks Vladek to bring in an expected package. Vladek agrees. This is the last time Steve sees his son.

Steve arrives home to an apartment that appears unchanged from when he left. No food consumed, no dirty dishes, the package still on the porch, Vladek's flip phone dead on his charger. A resident claims Vladek knocked on his door at 3 AM saying he was "going off grid" โ€” unconfirmed. Vladek's sister reports him missing the next day.
22
2022
Billboards, Searches, Community Rallies
The family mounts a large-scale awareness campaign. Billboards go up around Orange County. Approximately 30 search dogs, helicopters, infrared drones, and K9 units search the area. A red slide sandal is found in nearby woods โ€” consistent with what Vladek was wearing. The family asks investigators to search the woods again.
23
2023โ€“2024
Vigils, Flyers, and Expanded Outreach
The family holds annual vigils on UCF's campus. Sister Bethany distributes 300 flyers at the world's largest veterinary expo, believing Vladek may have left Central Florida. Nicole Schmidt โ€” mother of Gabby Petito โ€” attends a vigil in support. The Gabby Petito Foundation lends ongoing support to the family.
25
November 2025
Four Years โ€” Case Remains Open
The family marks four years without answers. A new detective is assigned to the case. Bethany carries Vladek's photo in her wedding bouquet, saves him a seat at her ceremony. Steve โ€” Vladek's father โ€” suffers three strokes this year. The family remains hopeful and continues pushing for answers. Coffee shops across the country feature his photo on cup sleeves. Case #21-83864 remains active.
